“How amazing that there are cheerleaders!” Sentiments like this were heard through the patio at Instituto Cervantes in Madrid before the show began. And the best was yet to come: the Game of the Year 2014 started off with a bang. 

The students had circled up around the basketball courts to await their cheerleaders and student-athletes. The first to appear were the cheerleaders – who look the name of Dulcineas, Don Quixote’s true love. With their smiles and pom-poms, they charmed the crowd through the entire event.

 Then arrived the standard-bearers and their banners, running through the corridor formed by the cheerleaders. Pumped up and ready to give their all in the training, the players then arrived, jumping around the ring formed by their classmates. Finally, the star of the show appeared: Rocinante, Don Quixote’s trusted horse and the school’s brilliant mascot.

 It was without doubt a well-orchestrated spectacle – something that continued when the final player arrived. None of them were able to contain their smiles when the great Joe Arlukas – the final protagonist – arrived at the basket, excited and challenged to one-on-one plays with the athletes.

 Once presented, all the participants were ready to begin their training, but not without first completing a warm-up consisting of everything from aerobics to jumping jacks to stretching. Once done, the cheerleaders psyched up the crowd with the morning’s first routine and choreography. How the other schools will shudder that this group has so much charisma and dances so well!

 Turning back to the sport, the players demonstrated their skills with their lay-ups, footwork, ball handling, and defense fundamentals. Then again, everything wasn’t going to be so easy; the final exercise consisted in one-on-one offenses against the NBA alum Joe Arlaukas, who hadn’t come ready to hold back. Only a few valiant opponents were able to stand their ground and made the basket. The head of physical education at IES Cervantes, Eduardo Ruiz, also taught the students some of the fundamentals of dribbling.

 There was nothing better to finish that all the participants gathering on the court-turned-dance-floor to dance following the cheerleaders. Once the song was finished, an official photo was taken with the mascot; players; cheerleaders; standard-bearers; the school’s physical education staff; Jow Arlaukas; Alberto López Ribé, President of the School Basketball Foundation; Pablo Carabias, Director of Events at the organization; and Julia Pérez, the principal, who also seized the moment to offer a few words in support of her students. The captains of both teams – boys’ and girls’ –and the cheerleaders also took the microphone to share their message of pride and school spirit. As the finale, a prize was given to the designer’s of the school’s new mascot.

And thus, with a smile on each face, the training was finished – all read for the great game against IES Avenida de los Toreros the next week.

“Qué fuerte que haya animadoras”: Frases como ésta fueron las que se escucharon en el patio del Instituto Cervantes de la Comunidad de Madrid antes de que empezara el Show. Y es que lo más fuerte estaba aún por llegar: The Game of the Year 2014 ha empezado a lo grande.   

Los alumnos y alumnas del centro se reunieron alrededor de la cancha de baloncesto a esperar a animar a sus estrellas colegiales. Las primeras en aparecer fueron las espectaculares Cheerleaders  Dulcineas y Dulcineos que, con sus sonrisas y pompones, derrocharon simpatía durante todo el evento. Después llegaron las pancartas, con sus respectivos portadores, que no dudaron en atravesar corriendo el pasillo de pompones formado por las animadoras. Llegaba entonces el momento de que los jugadores y jugadoras saltaran a la pista cargados de energía, dispuestos a darlo todo en el entrenamiento. Por último, llegaría la aparición estelar de la genial mascota:  Rocinante. Sin duda, una auténtica máquina del espectáculo. Algo así como el sexto jugador. Nadie ha sido capaz de contener la risa cada vez que ha entrado a canasta, saltado, animado e incluso retado a un 1x1 al Gran Joe Arlaukas, que era el último gran protagonista que faltaba por aparecer.

Una vez presentados, todo estaba listo para el comienzo del entrenamiento, no sin antes realizar un calentamiento a base de movimientos aeróbicos, saltos y hasta flexiones. Eso sí, el ambiente se animaría con la actuación de las Cheerleaders y la que sería su primera coreografía de la mañana. Que tiemblen las de los demás Institutos que este grupo tiene mucho, mucho carisma y ¡bailan muy bien!

Dejando turno al baloncesto de nuevo, los jugadores han demostrado su nivel mediante entradas a canasta, trenzas, manejo de balón y fundamentos de defensa. Ahora bien, no todo iba a ser tan fácil, el ejercicio final consistiría en ataques 1x1 contra el ex – jugador de la NBA Joe Arlaukas, que no había venido dispuesto a estar de brazos cruzados. Sólo algunos valientes fueron capaces de plantarle cara y hasta meter canasta. El responsable de Educación Física de IES Cervantes, Eduardo Ruiz, también ha ejercido de entrenador enseñando a los chicos y chicas algunos fundamentos de bote.

Para terminar, nada mejor que unir a todos los asistentes del evento en la pista a intentar seguir los pasos de las Cheerleaders bailando todos al unísono. Una vez concluida la canción se hizo la foto oficial con mascota, jugadoras y jugadores, animadoras y animadores, pancartas, los responsables de Educación Física del Centro, Joe Arlaukas, Alberto López Ribé, Presidente de la Fundación de Baloncesto Colegial; Pablo Carabias; Director de Eventos de la misma; y la Directora del centro: Julia Pérez, quien también aprovechó para dedicarle unas palabras de apoyo a sus alumnos. Los capitanes de ambos equipos y la de las animadoras también cogieron el micrófono para dar mensajes de ánimo. Además, se hizo entrega del premio a los autores del diseño de la mascota del centro. 

Y así, con una sonrisa en la cara, se dio por finalizada la sesión del entrenamiento. Todo listo para el gran partido contra IES Avda de los Toreros la próxima semana.
